We are always thankful and grateful for all of you who served and sacrificed for us, and thankful for your families...they served and sacrificed, also. This is a moving photograph and a heart touching story. Thank you from our hearts.

Mel, wonderful story and image...I was at Tuy Hoa during that time so we are of that generation...I did not have the kind of tough war you and Heidi had so I am always eternally grateful and thankful for those of you who did the dying and fighting in the most futile of places, times, and conflicts...

Thanks for letting me know about this section of your Vietnam photos, Mel. You're still a good looking man even after 42 years! I am positive I could sit and listen to you all day if you were of a mind to talk about your times over there. I do think talking 'it out' does release a bit of the negative feelings we hold onto...this is true in any situation, not an instant cure..but it's like a pressure cooker valve...let's a little escape at a time. My husband was one of the lucky ones who did not pass the physical. We were so relieved. However, my sister's husband did have to go over. That was really hard on her, but nothing compared to what he probably went through. He never talked about his experiences..kept it all inside. Everyone copes with what life dishes out to them differently, I guess. Again...Thank you for enduring for our country, Mel.

Very touching story Mel! I never realized there were so many dogs serving for our country. Let's hope Heidi was one of the dogs that lived on with the South Vietnamese people.

That's great Mel. Thank you for serving our country. The times were so controversial and the returning vets never got the recognition they deserved.

Oh, Mel ... I am of that generation. Shhhh .. don't tell anybody!! Was married for one week before my first husband shipped off to Da Nang. Heart-wrenching times. Beautiful image ... and how right you are about the stories, my friend. How right you are.

Description:

( Copyright Mel Steinhauer all rights reserved ) There are many statistics from the Vietnam War which are still being debated today. Over 2 million soldiers served in the Southeast Asia Theater of Operations. During that long war over 58,000 of us were killed, over 300,000 of us were wounded and over 2,000 of us are still listed as missing in action. We were sons, brothers, cousins, friends, nephews and some of us were fathers. Some were even daughters, sisters, nieces and mothers. There were also over 4,000 Military Working Dogs who served our country during that war and it is estimated they were responsible for saving over 10,000 lives. Only a very small number of our K-9 friends were permitted to come home by the time it was all over. Some were killed in action, some died of diseases and the rest were euthanized or given to the South Vietnamese military which was quickly defeated. As in any war, all of those statistics have names, faces and stories. Long ago and far away, U.S. Army Scout Dog Heidi and I were young once, and ... We Were Soldiers. ( A tribute to all who served, to all of our K-9 soldiers and especially to my best friend Heidi who I will never forget.)
