Wells Hotel Room 2 - Garnet Ghost Town - Montana
Garnet was a high country, gold mining boom town in the 1860's. Many miners brought their families to the rough location. As the boom continued, as many as a thousand people populated the town. A dozen saloons and two or three hotels followed. The Well's Hotel was the finest among them.
After a rigorous trip up the mountain trail by wagon to secluded Garnet, I suspect it was a surprise to be able to obtain accommodation in a full service hotel. A room like this could be had for a dollar or two a night. And, the full service kitchen, it is said, put out great food.
In 1912, half the town on one side of main street burned. The mines were somewhat played out by then anyway, so the town faded into history. Today, the state manages the property as a tourist site for those who are interested in the hardship and hardiness of the pioneers of a bygone era.
