Description
The gospel of Luke has the story of the two disciples who meet Jesus unawares as they travel from Jerusalem to Emmaus after the Crucifixion. Jesus speaks to them about why the Messiah had to suffer and die and tells of the many passages of Scripture that indicate this. When they ask Jesus to dine with them, they recognize him when he breaks the bread. Suddenly he disappears from their sight. They decide to return to Jerusalem to tell the other disciples what they have seen and heard. As they head back, they say to one another, "Were not our hearts burning within us as he talked and explained the Scriptures to us?" (Cf Luke 24:13-33) Inspired by the disciple's question, I came up with this image of a burning heart. The image would also work for a Valentine's card. I painted this in January 2014.
