Description
Recognized as the 'Mother Church of World Methodism', Wesley's Chapel and Leysian Mission was built in 1778 by John Wesley (the founder of Methodism). John Wesley, along with his brother Charles, reinvigorated English Christianity in the 18th century through evangelistic preaching, Christian discipleship, and vibrant worship. Wesley's plea for experiential Christianity struck a chord across all classes within British society. By the close of the 18th century, the Methodist Church was born, with Methodist evangelists and missionaries spread through Britain's global empire.
Wesley's Chapel was the first Methodist Church constructed for both the sacraments and preaching. While Wesley's preaching and organizational leadership led to the founding of Methodism and numerous churches, the chapel is the only church built specifically by John Wesley.
John Wesley's home sits adjacent to the chapel--off picture to the right. John's final resting place is behind the church. John's esteemed mother, Susannah Wesley, is buried across City Road from the chapel in Bunhill Fields Burial Grounds.
