Entrance to the McGavock Family Cemetery at the Carnton Plantation in Franklin, Tennessee. Carnton was the site of one of the bloodiest battles of the Civil War in the 2nd to last year of the war between the states. Carrie McGavock, also known as "The Widow of the South," interred (with the help of plantation slaves and workers) the remains of more than 1,000 Confederate soldiers, many of them nameless and unknown, on land adjacent to the site of the battlefield. The McGavock Family Cemetery lies at the head of the cemetery in sight of the plantation home, seen in the distance.
