Where The Lava Meets The Ocean
Photograph - Micrography
This image is a micrograph (photograph through a microscope) of basalt from the popular rocky cliffs at Mokuleia. These cliffs are located on the north shore of the Hawaiian island of O'ahu.
The image is titled Where the Lava Meets the Ocean because of the appearance in the image of the mafic (iron-rich) minerals (shown in orange) meeting fine-grained volcanic glass. This creates the appearance of when lava, the engine of creation, first makes contact with the ocean: one of the iconic images of Hawaii.
