Every January, to brighten the gloomy and rainy weather we have in New Orleans, I have a faithful orchid which finds this time to burst forth with a wonderful spray of blossoms. The remaining months of the year it hibernates, but what a joy to see it come to life when all the other plants outside are sleeping. On this particular day, I especially appreciated the backlighting of the late afternoon sun as it turned the petals into a translucent collection of gossamer shapes.
