Description
This is the left panel from a diptych "Why Not" painted in LA in the 1980's on 2 canvases each 48" x 60".
I have published both the left and right panels here so you can hang them the same as the original.
I have also published a print of the 2 images digitally combined.
I had just relocated to LA and found my first real studio. I was fascinated with LA and its layering. Everything was layered from the graffiti over graffiti over walls over signs to all the social layering of personalities over personalities. I had removed the relationship between objects and their accepted collective relationships and was dealing with the formal aspects of art in relationship to themselves.
Titles of paintings became important to me as well. A title of a painting can be so limiting and confine the viewer into a preconceived idea and not let the viewer have his own personal experience but rather a collective experience, so I chose titles that were equally as open as the work I was creating, thereby letting the viewer supply the meaning because he can supply no meaning other than his own.
