Wild Horses Near Chernobyl
Photograph - Photograph
Wild horses near Chernobyl. Herd of Przewalski's horses in the restricted zone around Chernobyl nuclear power station. The concrete sarcophagus built to enclose the destroyed nuclear reactor is seen in the background. The land in the restriction zone is still heavily contaminated with radioactive material from the explosion of reactor 4 on 26 April 1986. However, lack of human interference in the area has allowed the wildlife to thrive. Przewalski's horses have never been domesticated and are the only truly wild horses found today. Photographed in April 2006, twenty years after the disaster.
