Visitors from the sunnier parts of the world.. will not understand fully what a wet grey day is like in north west England in November. After one of the wettest months on record during which the heaviest rainfall ever recorded in a 24 hr period (12”-300mm) in England happened a few miles up the road. Add to that the doom and gloom every time you turn on the TV.. so this work is about this combination of feelings.
The plant with the flower is a sort of act of defiance against the miserableness of grey winter days and grey winter news. I’m considering doing one with a Christmas tree.. because these sort of grey days are all part of the build up of Christmas. What do you think ?
Anyway its almost December now.. and this morning there is a sharp chill in the air and I can see patches of white snow on the tops of the mountains. Which is nice.
Folks who regularly look at my work will know I enjoy that hinterland where total abstraction hints at a type of personal reality. I'm also big into contrasts and textures and contrasts.. everything through the window is man made.. non organic and the only object inside is the organic flower. Mush, complexity and anarchy outside contrasts with a simple order within. I'm going to lie down now.
(The inclusion of the flower has nothing whatsoever to do with noticing that flower paintings sell well at Fine Art America)
