Description
This is a digital painting created in Gimp software without the use of any photo image or texture from elsewhere.
I did a lot of sewing as a young person, following the example of my grandmothers and mother. In a fabric store, remaining pieces of fabric from the ends of bolts, known as remnants, are offered at a reduced price. They are in a big basket or piled up on a table. It is tempting to buy them if you couldn't afford them at the regular price. However, excitement can turn to disappointment when you see the piece of cloth you wanted for months to make that special dress, and now you find that although the price is cut, the remnant is too small to make your dress no matter how you rearrange the pattern pieces on the material. Grandma might take that little bit and make a cushion cover or cut it up in equal squares and use it in a quilt.
I wasn't sure exactly why I was making this painting as it appears. It just evolved, like most of my artworks. After they are finished I see symbols and start to understand.
I feel it expresses life as seen during our later years, the gold cords tying beautiful things together. It's possible that the window represents the soul, the future, or even the coming of death in the symbol of cold winter winds blowing the remnants around. As we get older we realize the preciousness of things we took for granted, like our basic 5 senses, and the ability to move and do things when we feel like it. I think in reality we are only holding onto these remnants by a delicate thread... maybe that is all we have to hold onto life by, but in a way it makes the loveliness more wonderful.
Remnants are the stuff of the winter season of our lives. We see them like jewels now, and we grab what we can. It will be gone in a moment.
