Wormwood oil analysis. Chemist (lower right) and plant physiologist (standing) using steam distillation to determine the essential oil content of wormwood leaves. The wormwood being investigated here is sweet or annual wormwood (Artemisia annua), from which the drug artemisinin is obtained. This drug is used as a treatment for malaria. Extracts from annual wormwood have also been found to have antibacterial and antioxidant properties. This research is being carried out by the Agricultural Research Service of the US Department of Agriculture.
