Fokker D VIII - ‘Spoiled for Choice’
The D VIII was the last throw of the dice for the famous Fokker Mk. First issued to operational units in July 1918 the D VIII suffered from a rash of wing failures attributed to shoddy workmanship - the wing was built by a piano factory. The aircraft was grounded until the problem was rectified and re-issued to the Jastas in October 1918. With little time to prove it’s capability the D VIII was deemed to be an excellent machine and easy to fly. When operational with Jasta 5 a few victories were scored but insufficient time remained to determine the true worth of an innovative design.
The image shows a D VIII of Jagdstaffel 6 harrying a couple of SE5As in one of the closing combats of WWW1.
I am indebted to Peter Miller for the D VIII images - many thanks
