Description
Yareta or Llareta plants (Azorella compacta) are an endangered species found in the high altitude deserts and dry puna regions of the central Andes. These plants were growing directly on an eroded volcanic ignimbrite rock outcrop in the Siloi Desert in southwest Bolivia. Due to the cold dry climate they are very slow growing, at a rate of up to 1cm / year, the biggest plants can easily be 2-3,000 years old. In some areas where there is little other vegetation they are used by local people for fuel (less so than in the past) and they also have medicinal uses.
