Description
This piece carries deep meaning to me. I played hockey since I was five years old. My dad was introduced to the sports late, picking it up in his 30s, and it wasn't long thereafter when my older brother laced up the skates. We played in the garage, on the street, and on ice when we were fortunate enough. I had probably spent a decade at Valley Ice Arena. It was like a second home to me. But on February 11, 1987, my life was forever changed at that rink. Right there, along with boards, between the blue line and the goal line is where I suffered a break to my cervical spine. That injury caused my spinal cord to be bruised, and from that point on I was medically classified as a quadriplegic. I don't hate the sport. I don't hate the person who caused the injury. It happened. But this painting represents the scene of one of my most life-altering events.
