Description
The roots of York-Hampton Parish Church [Grace Episcopal Church] in Yorktown, Virginia, reach back to 1632 when the first point of Anglican witness in the area opened at the confluence of Wormley Creek and the york River. The marl walls leading to the present Greek Revival style church date to 1697 and the first brick church building. The church survived Yorktown's bombardment during the Revolutionary War, but it succumbed to fire in 1814. Rebuilt in 1848 and heavily damaged during the Civil War, the present structure reflects preservation work completed in the 1920s. Among the notable Revolutionary War era members was Thomas Nelson, Jr.--signer of the Declaration of Independence. His grave is behind the marl wall in the church cemetery, alongside generations of his family. The gravestone of Maj. William Gooch [29 October 1655] is among the oldest surviving markers in the county.
York-Hampton Parish Church is listed on the Virginia Landmarks Register and the National Register of Historic Places.
