Some artists enjoy the challenges and uncertainties natural materials. There is an unpredictability of just what the outcomes might be. Techniques change; themes emerge; accidents and coincidences happen.Sometimes it's called 'Chance Art', other times Rustic or Environmental, maybe Land Art... They all share the essentially collaborative nature of the maker and the materials and the persisting question who is really making whom?
In Natural Material work, there are several temperaments: the Disposition towards the seeming chaos of nature; the delight in the Hunt or perhaps Discovery of the materials. Then there is the Storage, the Re-discovery and then the various more well-known aspects of Making...
The most distinctive feature of Worksing with Natural materials is that the original integrity of the natural materials is still evident, yet there is also pleasant evidence of human crafting, ordering and geometry.
