Photography Contest Becomes Family Affair

Photography Contest Becomes Family Affair

Cowboys & Indians magazine annual photography contest has become a fun family competition for Fine Art America member, Toni Hopper, and her husband, Rex. Even one of their sons have joined in the competition. It began when Toni submitted an entry at deadline for the March 2009 edition. "Cowboy Silhouette" was listed as an honorable mention image in that edition, "Photographing the West" on page 120.

It is one of her most popular viewed images online, first when it was published on Flickr, and also now on the Fine Art America and Pixels sites under her gallery of Chisholm Trail and Cowboy images. It features a cowboy and his horse on the 2007 Oklahoma Centennial Chisholm Trail Cattle Drive. In the March 2015 edition," her husband's "Where Sky Meets Land" featuring a dramatic sunset storm cloud in southern Oklahoma, was published also in the honorable mention section. That image has been featured three times in various Fine Art America groups since it was published in June 2014....

BAM Graduates Show Diverse Works

BAM Graduates Show Diverse Works

Arts and media graduates celebrate their final year with BAM, an exhibition of diverse works. Judith Ritchie profiles three graduates.

Subjects ranging from identity, memory and consumerism, to jewellery exchanges and product design have been explored by 15 graduating Bachelor of Arts and Media students from the Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology. Each Level 7 student has followed a line of investigation, with final works opening to the public in an exhibition, BAM, on November 26.

Natalia Chaplin has explored how consumers are on a never ending journey; desire and temptation leading them from one purchase to another. She questions whether they are searching for ways to feel better or to ft into society, while exploring the environmental repercussions.

Through Hooked, a series of acrylic and water colour paintings, Chaplin looks at the constant disappointment associated with consumerism, while reflecting upon the ultimate strain a consumerist lifestyle...

A Lightness Of Being. Tayseer Barakat Solo Exhibition At Zawyeh Gallery

A Lightness Of Being. Tayseer Barakat Solo Exhibition At Zawyeh Gallery

Tayseer Barakat is a Gaza-born, Ramallah-based artist who works with a variety of materials to create pieces that reflect a combination of Arab and Palestinian visual art and mythology with contemporary aesthetics of political struggle.

Tayseer’s latest solo exhibition, Lightness of Being, launched this week at Zawyeh gallery in Ramallah. Curated by Ziad Anani and Sulieman Mleahat, the collection covers the past two years of Tayseer’s work.

Born in Jabaliya refugee camp in 1959, Tayseer recalled in an interview with Palestine Monitor how he decided at the age of 10 that he wanted to study fine art. Lacking a mentor, Tayseer was offered the chance to study economy at Alexandria in Egypt, but quickly realising it wasn’t for him, he returned to Gaza after three months and focused all his energy on taking the necessary exams and making the right contacts to gain entry onto the Fine Arts course. “It was a huge turning point,” he says, “one of the most beautiful days in my...

Fabio Belloni By M.A.D. Gallery, Milan, Italy
