In The Garden

July 22nd, 2008 - San Juan Bautista, CA

In the Garden

From September 2 to October 6, at the Unitarian Universalist Church of the Monterey Peninsula, 490 Aguajito Road, Carmel, CA 93923. Darlene Boyd’s vivid presentations of “In the Garden” will be on view. This series was inspired from many sources, such as using the garden as a metaphor for both physical and spiritual sustenance. I can best describe my allure for the garden in these words. “I find that all the social problems, regardless of scale, are found in miniature in and around my garden. This is not surprising because culture is a structure that is artificially imposed on people and reflected in their gardens. And yet, my garden is also an isle of solitude around which the increasingly hectic human world turns. I thus return again and again to my garden, there to touch my spiritual ground and to confront my understanding of the worldly problems outside of its borders… It is not that I don't care about what goes on in the outer world, but rather that my garden is at once an isle of solitude in a sea of strife and an entrance into a realm of reality beyond the material… Thus, in some small way, I can affect the world at the scale of my garden by consciously learning to understand and work with those physical, biological, and spiritual principles that govern the intrinsic wholeness of Nature--and myself as a quintessential part of that whole.” (Chris Maser, 2002, from The World is My Garden) One can then add that frequently gardens are planted to grow food and provide sustenance for our physical bodies.
My second inspiration came from the recent acceptance and installation of our minister to our congregation. In the process of searching and nurturing our community, I find that, to me, our minister is a gardener, who tends to his duties and congregation with nurturing kindness, while also expecting us to play our roles in the society at large. Therefore, in painting aspects of the garden, that both please and reflect elements of life in a micro-cosmos, I can understand and cope with the larger world that is a garden planet that we must tend to with care and responsible consideration.

Ms. Boyd will personally be available to greet art viewers on Sunday, September 28, between 10:30 to 11:15 a.m. If you want more information regarding Ms. Boyd’s artworks this can be obtained at www.darleneboyd.com or email her at darlenesboyd@artexperiencedsb.com.
