Description
At this site Loomis' Battery smashed Confederate attempts to Capture Nashville Pike, the only supply line open to the Union army. On Dec. 31, 1962 repeated charges of case shot and canister from these cannons saved the day for the Union Army. On the 3rd of Jan. 1863 the supporting fire from the two Batteries help two infantry regiments from Beatty's Brigade and two Infrantry regiments from Spears Brigade drive the Confederates from the field... securing the battlefield of Stones River for the Union Army.
Later this became the National Cemetery in which over 6100 Union Soldiers find as their final resting place... sadly over 2500 of these are Unknown.
