"Reindeer Lichen" is a threatened species, although many of these are found in many areas. This is found in almost all of North America in many different species and mostly wet places. In the Ozarks, they are found around seeps and springs. An amazing quality of this plant is that it can take very hot weather and very cold weather also. I grabbed this black & white while roaming around the Smith Creek Preserve in Newton County on a cold February morning of 2008. I found it well above the creek bed in a pool of water possibly fed by a spring or runoff from the surrounding mountains.
