A cluster of blue periwinkles, Nodilittorina unifasciata, on calcareous sandstone, Blairgowrie, Victoria. Periwinkles are characteristic creatures of rocky shores. N. unifasciata is found in crevices and depressions in the rock ( as here ), high up in the intertidal zone, where it may be exposed to the air for several hours at each tide. It feeds by grazing on algae and lichens; in this picture, a slight greenish hue is visible around the cluster, representing the presence of its food material. Also visible in the picture are a few scattered barnacles and small mussels. Barnacles are strongly attached to the substrate and protected from damage and desiccation at low tide by a series of calcareous plates. Underwater, the opercular plates in the centre of the shell open to allow filter-feeding. Mussels attach themselves to the substrate by means of a byssus, comprising fibrous threads.
