Artist's Description

Etruscan warrior (Mars of Todi} hollow-cast bronze statue 141 cm. high. Dating from the 4th century BC it was found in Montesanto, near Todi, at the site of an ancient sanctuary apparently dedicated to the Greek Ares (Roman Mars). It shows a warrior dressed in armour possibly performing a libation before going into battle. He leant on an iron spear held in his left hand. His right hand held a cup (patera), The inscription on the edge of the warrior's cuirass records the donation of the statue to the god by a man called Ahal Trutitis. The inscription is in the Umbrian language and uses an Etruscan alphabet from Volsinii (Orvieto) indicating that the statue was made there. His helmet has been lost. Vatican Museum
