According to Hindu legend, Lakshmi was created at the same time as the moon during the great churning of the milky ocean. Lakshmi is considered a central goddess in Hinduism and is celebrated on Diwali - "The festival of lights".
Lakshmi is the goddess of beauty, fortune, luck and success.
In Bengal, Lakshmi is worshiped during a night in Autumn when the moon is full, the brightest night of the year. It is believed that she showers wealth on this night.
