Artist's Description
Mirabilis anther and pollen grains, confocal fluorescence light micrograph. This anther is from Mirabilis jalapa, the four o'clock flower. Anthers are the pollen-producing structures of flowers, and pollen grains (yellow) are being released from an anther that has split along its stromium in a process called dehiscence. The fluorescence markers, used here in an RGB (red-green-blue) colour-coding, are DAPI, acridine orange, and Alexa Fluor 546. Magnification x110 when printed at 10 centimetres across.
