The stains show nerve cell bodies (pink) and the neurites (yellow, either axons or dendrites) that connect the cell bodies to form a network. Neurons transmit electrical signals around the body, especially the brain and the spinal cord. These neurons have been grown from NT2 cells, a human teratocarcinoma cell line capable of differentiation into nerve cells. Research like this may discover methods of neural regeneration that could treat spinal paralysis and other nerve disorders.
