Paul J. Crutzen (born 1933), Dutch chemist, holding a sheet showing the reaction of nitrogen oxides with ozone. Crutzen is Professor of chemistry at Max-Planck Institute for Chemistry, Mainz, Germany. In 1995 he received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry along with Mario Molina and F. Sherwood Rowland for their work on atmospheric chemistry, particularly the formation and decomposition of ozone. Crutzen began his career as a civil engineer in Holland but moved to Stockholm University, initially as a computer programmer, but eventually became a researcher on stratospheric ozone. In the 1970's he published papers describing how nitrogen oxide (NO) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) react catalytically with ozone accelerating the rate of reduction of ozone content.
