About the Image

St. Clare of Assisi by Susan Clark

Wjhen framing this painting, I discovered it was much nicer offset behind the mat, so I have cropped this photo to match the framed original. St. Clare with the help of the Bishop of Assisi, ran from her wealthy parent's home on Palm Sunday and followed St. Francis. She started the first woman's order of Sisters living in poverty and was the first woman to write the rule for an order. The St. Clares still live in cloister and in poverty, praying for us all.

But, with portraits, sometimes having the subject actually present is not possible. Then, I need to get to know the subject, through discussion with a person who did actually know, or through biographies, photos, old paintings. Before I paint an animal or a person or even landscape, I must know about them so that I may "capture the essence" of the subject. Just looking at a photograph is not...
