This is gorgeous! I'm glad you included the fence. That's an amazing work of art in itself. I just drove through Strong City, but I didn't see this. I need to see more of my own state. Liked and favorited!

Jim McCain replied:

Hi Catherine, this is one of my favorite places in Kansas and I was fortunate to find it. I don't like driving the interstates so I always find some backroads to travel. Picked a great one that day. This is a beautifully restored schoolhouse and the wall is a work of art for sure. I would love to shoot this on a day when there are white puffy clouds and lots of blue sky... Perhaps when you go see it, you will have that kind of day... Thanks for all your comments ! :)

Artist's Description

This is a photo of Lower Fox Creek School. It is a one room school located approximately 2 miles north of Strong City, Kansas and situated alongside the Flint Hills Byway (Hwy 177). The building rests atop a grassy knoll which is part of the Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve. The idea for the school was conceived in 1878 and after a parcel of land was donated by local rancher Stephen F. Jones, construction began. It was built from limestone blocks brought from a quarry nearby. Typical of most one room schools, there was a separate door for the girls and boys to enter, thus the 2 doors in the front. An interesting feature in this photo is the handcrafted native limestone wall that protected the slope on the north side of the school. It is meticulously constructed with every stone fitted in place perfectly. Though it was finished in 1882, the school didn't open until Sept. 1 of 1884. The first teacher was Dora Peer who made a whopping $35 a month. The school remained open...

About Jim McCain

Jim McCain

My personal connection with art started as a child living on a farm along historic Route 66 and the Canadian River. My mother had art talent as well, but like me, she never had any training. It wasn't until after her death that we discovered some drawings of hers from middle school. So I owe her for my interest in many forms of art. Living on the farm adjacent to the Canadian gave her the chance to teach us all about nature and the wonders to be found in the woodlands and streams. I grew to appreciate and care for all living things and that ultimately led me to photography. My first camera was an old Kodak box camera using 620 film. Our first family trip farther than Oklahoma City was to Montana when I was about 14 years old. I shot...
