About the Image

OWLS HEAD LIGHTHOUSE by Skip Willits

OWLS HEAD LIGHTHOUSE West Penobscot Bay & Rockland Harbor, ME This is one of two lighthouses at the entrance to Rockland Harbor. Owls head is atop a headland on the outside of the harbor and Rockland Breakwater is on an .8 mile breakwater closer to the city. Owls head is only 20 feet tall, but high enough above the water that anything taller would be a waste of building material. One can only imagine trudging up and down to the tower during a northern gale in the winter to maintain the light. President John Quincy Adams authorized the construction of a light at this site in 1825 and a fourth order lens was installed in 1856. There is ample parking and the climb to the tower is well worth the effort to see the view.
