Artist's Description
Urine infection. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM), showing epithelial cells (centre) and red blood cells (red) present in a urine sample taken from someone with a urinary tract infection (UTI). In urinary tract conditions such as infections, inflammation and malignancies, more epithelial cells are present. A bladder infection may result in large numbers of transitional epithelial cells in urine sediment, as seen here. Magnification x5000 when printed to centimetres wide.
