Nicolaus Copernicus (1473-1543), Polish astronomer. Copernicus's heliocentric theory that the Earth orbited the Sun began the revolution that overthrew more than 1000 years of astronomical thought. Copernicus feared persecution by the Catholic Church, and delayed publication of On the Revolutions of the Heavenly Spheres until the year he died. Across top is Copernicus's name and profession (mathematician). At bottom is a Latin couplet. This portrait is from an edition of 'Icones sive Imagines Virorum Literis Illustrium' (first published 1587) by Nikolaus Reusner (1545-1602), with woodcut portraits by Tobias Stimmer (1539-1584).
