1545 Roman book with a woodcut portrait of Euclid on the cover. Euclid (meaning, good glory, 300 BC) was a Greek mathematician, often referred to as the "Father of Geometry". Little is known about his life. The date and place of Euclid's birth and the date and circumstances of his death are unknown. No likeness or description of Euclid's physical appearance made during his lifetime survived antiquity. Therefore, Euclid's depiction in works of art is the product of the artist's imagination. Euclid brought together previous mathematical work and extended it. He recorded this in a systematic way in thirteen books called the Elements of Geometry. Six books deal with the geometry of planes, four with the theory of numbers and three with the geometry of solid objects. Euclid's work was translated into many different languages and it dominated mathematics for over 2000 years. The Elements of Geometry were the first mathematics books to be printed.
