Artist's Description
Colored transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a virion (virus particles, stained blue) of the parainfluenza virus, a member of the paramyxovirus class. Individual virions possess helical capsid symmetry, contain RNA and are enveloped. Small spikes, which project from the surface of the protein envelopes, enable the virions to attach themselves to mucoprotein receptors on the surface of host cells. The virus causes minor respiratory infections. Magnification unknown. Enhancement of [5L3536].
