Abandoned Ice House circa late 1800.s by Charlie Spear

This old ice house is near only about 5 miles from my home. I was out investigating local imagery and subjects for plein air. This old ice house was metal over a wood frame and stuffed with wheat straw which was mostly gone due to mice and other crawlies. It sits there like a museum piece waiting to be discovered or at least stir a memory of cutting ice from a local lake and storing it well into summer for refrigeration of milk meat and other perishables. My dad was a Refrigeration and Cooling Engineer so I guess it comes naturally.

Charlie Spear was born in 1948 in the Midwest. The era of Modern Art was in full swing with the Sixties generating an artistic smorgasbord of art styles and new media. Much of his early career was spent learning about art through teaching art. His imagery grew out of early television and graphic media. Spear paints both as a landscape painter and an abstractionist which characterizes his ecclectic tendencies. Philip Guston has had an influence on his art of recent. Exploring the art media's physical qualities is an important element in his style coupled with an atavistic love of an expressionistic drawing style.
