This is an outstanding piece of work. The aura of Powell River with its resident fishing boats is portrayed beautifully. The vessel “Shirley” is very thought provoking to me personally.

Artist's Description
Johann Adam Schall von Bell (1592-1666), German Jesuit astronomer. Schall studied in Cologne and Rome, joining the Society of Jesus in 1611. He travelled to China in 1618 as part of a group of missionaries. He was sent to Beijing in 1630, rising to become a counsellor of the Qing dynasty that came to power in 1644. Schall held the post of Director of the Imperial Observatory and the Tribunal of Mathematics. The Latin form of Schall's name, and a reference to his role as a mandarin at the Chinese court, is at upper left below the world map. This artwork appeared in the work 'China monumentis' (1667) by German Jesuit scholar Athanasius Kircher.
