This is a full size bust in clay of the agonized face of a slave. A man ripped from his homeland, his family & his culture. Forced to live in the worst conditions on the ship bringing him to the USA. Frightened, alone, treated
inhumanly and not understanding why. Then put on a stage with people all around him, looking in his mouth, poking & probing his body. Strange sounds being spoken, buy he understands nothing. Rough hands pull him off stage & hand him over to an angry looing white man who puts heavy chains around his hands and legs then shoves him into a large box with African men, woman & children from many different tribes.
I am a self-taught artist working in a variety of mediums: paint in oils & acrylics, 3D on canvas, sculpture in various mediums, digital art and photography. I use found objects, things that can be recycled, dried flowers & leaves, papers, material, cords, metal, skulls & bones, doll parts,
doll eyes, ribbons, safety pins, wire, etc. A lot of my art makes social statements or is edgy.
I was a professional photographer for over 20 yrs. in New York City and had my own business Esbin-Anderson Photography (with a partner). When I retired was that I decided to pursue doing what I loved painting and sculpting.
