The long, slim neck helps to distinguish Anhingas from cormorants. Anhingas often swim submerged to the neck. The sharply pointed bill is used to spear fish as they dive under and swim submerged while fishing. We witnessed one walk up a tree that was on a 45 degree angle to near the top and hold its wings out to dry. When they come out of the water they appear to be all black. Only when the wings dry out do the white feathers on their back appear.
