Don Quixote thought they were knights he must fight - but they were just windmills. Still, they are beautiful, standing tall and slim against an auburn and rust-colored sky, ensconced by the lush presence of greenery. Literary and whimsical. The sky was painted by brush, but then each leaf and each piece of silver plating on the windmill was done one "pat" at a time, using a palette knife. This style of painting is called impasto, which is an Italian word for the method of applying the color by layers. A rust wash was then applied to the finished painting as the last veil of color.
