Artist's Description
Alquilar was invited to work at the John Michael Kohler metal foundries for two residencies. Here she produced an astounding number of distinctive, spiritual sculptures in brass and cast iron.The process is as follows;1. Alquilar sculpts image in clay. 2. Alquilar casts image in wax. 3. Maria casts wax in catalytic sand which she then re-sculpts with a small drill. this gives each work a distinctive original quality.4. An employee pours the desired metal. 5.The rough hewn sculpture is sandblasted by the artist. 6. Various chemical patinas, stains and original experimental patinas are applied by the artist. * Lay Away Plan is acceptable for purchase

The first painting on this site Zion's Children, is a continuation of the mystical series begun in 1985 by artist Maria Alquilar. These works on metal, wood and sometimes, as in this case, velvet explore most of humanities need to create Heroes, Saints and other Divinities to absorb and share their suffering. Alquilar enhances the mysteries and myths of major religions of the world. These include Voodoo, Catholicism, Asian as well as pre Catholic Mexican and Southwest indigenous people’s spiritual rituals.
