It is a method of male sterilization in which the vas deferens (indicated by the arrow) is cut. The vas deferens is the duct that carries sperm from the testis (egg shaped, at bottom) into the urethral duct of the penis (at left). The cut ends of the vas deferens are tightly closed with ligatures (close-up shown in square). This prevents sperm from being ejected at ejaculation providing a method of contraception that is safe and close to 100% efficient.
