The town was part of 59,000 acres acquired by the US government for the Manhattan Project, which was established to develop nuclear weapons during WWII. The sign reads: "The Atomic City welcomes you. Please drive and walk carefully. 137 days since our last traffic fatality. Our record - 1423 days to Nov. 6, 1949."
