The Aye-aye (Daubentonia madagascariensis) is one of the weirdest animals on the planet. With his rodent-like teeth, a special thin middle finger and huge ears, the aye-aye could easily be classified as a combination between a rat, a woodpecker and a bat. However, the aye-aye is a closer relative to us, humans, than to any bird or rodent species.
Native to the island of Madagascar. The aye-aye feeds on insects and their larvae by "knocking" on the tree trunk and waiting for the tiny insect to move, so that he/she can hear them and create a tiny hole in the tree.
The aye-aye's strange appearance and weird behaviour has brought a pretty wrong perception of the animal. Many native people still believe the aye-aye is a kind of a demon that brings bad fortune to villages, so many aye-ayes are being killed and hunted. This, plus the massive, ever-expanding habitat destruction has brought the aye-aye to the brink of extinction.
