Artist's Description

Shattered basalt. A basalt rock-wall being slowly shattered by uplift from fault movement. Basalt is formed from solidified volcanic lava. As the mol- ten lava cools it contracts, causing tensional forces that pull open vertical fractures around solid columns of rock. This area of basalt has been shattered along the fracture lines as a result of uplift from fault movement. A fault is an enormous fracture in the Earth's crust caused by plate movements. Photographed in Washington State, USA.
