I have painted a generation of women in this painting, from the pregnant mother, toddlers, teenagers, woman from their twenties to forties and finally the grandmothers. I thought the best way to display them all was in the nude at a river under the trees with lots of sunshine and greenery, so that light and shadow can have full play on the skin.

I was born in Zimbabwe and grew up in Cape Town and Phalaborwa (a small town in the far north of South Africa), where I grew up as a 'bush baby'. This was the seed of my love for the environment. The environment in those days was unspoiled and completely natural. It was a bush existence. The Kruger National Park was within walking distance from my home. Leopard, baboon, elephant etc., were common sightings in and around the little town, with some fatalities.
