Description
Black Spitfire MK VB Travancore II Print
Sgt. Peter Durnford
Sgt. Peter Durnford became a handful of RAF pilots to take part in night interception duties in late 1941/early 1942. Painted completely black and omitting serial numbers and wing roundrels, black Spitfire Mk Vs of No. III Squadron, were tasked with the complex mission of seek and destroy missions at night. Using an array of search light techniques, reckoning, and radar communication, pilots hunted for key targets in the dead of night. Unfortunately, the "Smack" technique of intercepting night fighters proved to be terribly challenging.
Peter Durnford's Spitfire Mk VB JU-H "Travancore II" was temporarily painted black for these missions. However, Travancore II would not see action at night, but instead during the day. On February 12, 1942 Peter Durnford and elements of No. III Squadron were alerted to the presence of the German cruiser Prinz Eugen and cruiser Scharnhorst and Gneisenau in the English Channel. Peter Durnford claimed a Messerschmitt bf-109 during this mission and would eventually claim a total of 5 confirmed air-to-air victories. "Travancore II" would eventually be repainted back to its original configuration.
This fine art print includes an aged background designed from an actual World War II military map. A timeless design for any decor!
