Artist's Description

While we were enjoying the mountains we came upon this female grouse that it thought if it stayed in one place we could not see it. I moved in about 10 feet of it and took this flash photo of it. The blue grouse is 15 to 21 inches in length. The male blue grouse is gray to bluish-gray with a red to yellow-orange comb over its eyes. It has a yellow neck sac surrounded by white. The female is spotted brown with a dark tail. Male blue grouse in the rockies have a red neck sac instead of a yellow one. Their breeding habitat is the edges of conifer and mixed forests in mountainous regions of North America and Eurasia. Their range is closely associated with that of various conifers. The nest is a scrape on the ground concealed under a shrub or log. The blue grouse can be found in bush areas in coastal rain forests, burned areas, mountain forests and subalpine forest clearings. About Robert Bales

Robert Bales

I am a retired teacher, coach and athletic director. While my wife, Judy, and I were teaching she had a photo studio, and I had a dark room where I did black and white and color. Some was for the studio while most of it was just a hobby. When we retired in 2000, we sold our house in Eastern Washington and moved onto our boat, Last Class, and our motorhome. We sold Last Class a few years ago and bought a small house in Yuma, Arizona and this year bought one in Emmett Idaho. Now we spend the summers in Emmett and the winters in Yuma. Over our 50 years of marriage, we have always had an interest in photography and still do. You may order any unframed photo from this website. Just email me at hay5bales@yahoo.com the name of the photo...
