Nikolai Nikolaevich Bogolyubov (1909-1992), centre, Soviet mathematician and physicist and Director of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR), talking to his colleagues. Bogolyubov was born in Russia, and then educated in the Ukraine. He worked in applied mathematics, solving non-linear equations. He also worked on superfluidity, superconductivity and quantum physics. He was a member of the USSR Academy of Sciences, and his awards include Hero of Socialist Labor, the Lenin Prize, the USSR State Prize, the Lomonosov Gold Medal, and the Dirac Medal. He was director of JINR, in Dubna, near Moscow, Russia, from 1965-1988. Photographed in Dubna on 1 January 1972.
