I fell in love with this photo the day that Jan posted it. The cards are beautiful, frame able for a small space. I like that they have plenty of room for writing or doodling inside.

Artist's Description

A boxing collage is hung above the bar in the Virginian Hotel Saloon, Medicine Bow, Wyoming. The two large photos on the bottom are from the July 4th, Reno, Nevada bout between Jack Johnson and Jim Jeffries.

Owen Wister (1860-1938) is considered the father of western fiction. His 1901 work, "The Virginian," is the first cowboy novel. It proved so popular that it was reprinted 14 times in eight months. And it has been filmed five times, first in 1914 by director Cecil B. DeMille (1881-1959), starring Dustin Farnum (1874-1929).

The 1929 classic early talkie, starring Gary Cooper (1901-1961), is recognized as the best version, even if a bit creaky today. "You want to call me that, smile" line to villain Walter Huston (1884-1950), as Trampas, has entered film dialogue lore.

The film is directed by Victor Fleming (1889-1949), who started off in pictures as a camera assistant for Allan Dwan (1885-1981). Today he is best...

About David Lee Guss

David Lee Guss

I first became obsessed with photography and motion pictures while growing up in post WW2 Manila in the Philippine Islands in the late 1940's/early 1950's. Film noirs were a particular influence. But my first love remains the theater. I acted in numerous amateur productions from 1958 to 1978. In 1979 I earned a MA in drama from the University of Arizona; earlier getting a BA in English from the University of Minnesota, where I co-founded the first film society on campus and ran it for four years. While at the U of A, I studied with the master black and white photo essayist W. Eugene Smith (1918-1978) the last year of his life. I am the last person cited in Jim Hughes' definitive biography of Gene, as I wrote about attending his final...
