About the Image

Buddha Shakyamuni and the Six Supports by Leslie Rinchen-Wongmo

Buddha Shakyamuni lived and attained enlightenment in India 2500 years ago. In this thangka, his left hand is in the position of meditative equipoise and his right hand touches the ground symbolizing his victory over interferences. He is surrounded by representations of the six perfections which are to be cultivated on the path to enlightenment Generosity, Patience, Enthusiastic Effort, Ethical Discipline, Concentration, and Wisdom and supported on a lion throne of fearlessness.

About the Artist - Leslie Rinchen-Wongmo

Leslie Rinchen-Wongmo

Leslie Rinchen-Wongmo, a Californian who has lived in many places, creates lively stitched silk images. She developed her skill in four years of apprenticeship to Tibetan craftsmen in India and is one of few non-Tibetans to have mastered their traditional textile art. Leslie has always loved working with fabric and colors as well as working on herself, so it gives her great pleasure to be able to create inspiring images of personal transformation from pieces of colorful fabrics. All the better when those images also inspire others! She studied design at the University of California in Santa Cruz and continues to broaden her education with art and textile studies in California and Europe. She is a member of the American Craft...
